Abstract
I am delighted and honoured to be part of this symposium. It is especially appropriate that one should be commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the United Nations in New Zealand which has provided a very important example. It is an example of what commitment, the force of ideas and participation can do within the UN. Even a country which may be relatively small can make a big difference to the work of the UN. The participation of New Zealand in peacekeeping activities, especially these last several years, and its very active role in the Security Council during its two-year tenure, have been much appreciated.
