Abstract

Ambrogio Lorenzetti’s fresco paintings, The Allegory of Good and Bad Government (1337–1339) in Siena’s Palazzo Pubblico, contain an evocative image of social harmony. In the fresco known as The Effects of Good Government in the Town and Country we find, on the left of the picture, the interior of a city opened up for us to see the life and culture made possible by good government (Plate 1).
