Abstract

The papers in the symposia led to discussions to which I have tried to do justice in what follows. The reactions to these discussions, however, are mine and I do not claim to summarize different points of view in ways which would always be acceptable to their proponents. That is one reason why I have not attributed the various voices in this afterword to specific participants in the conference. Where similar points were repeated at various times by different participants I have not hesitated to bring them together in a single ‘voice’ where I have thought this philosophically or stylistically advantageous. Nevertheless, my hope is that the end result will give a fair indication of the discussions which occurred, and that this record will enhance the collection.
