Sociological, Sociocultural and Economic Explanations
Before devoting his entire time to teaching and writing, Tarde worked for several years as a magistrate, and was at one time head of the Statistics Service within the French ministry of justice. In addition to numerous articles, Tarde published many books, three of which are of particular interest to criminology. These are: Comparative Criminality (La Criminalité comparée 1886), Penal Philosophy (La Philosophie pénale 1890), and The Laws of Imitation (Les Lois de l’imitation 1890).
