Abstract
The following study is based on ethnographic fieldwork carried out in 1989 in a Pomak1 village located in a mountainous area in the prefecture of Xanthi,2 northeastern Greece. My initial interests in undertaking research concerned the complex changes which appear in a local community when it is confronted with a highly monetarised economy. Yet this particular community is an ethnic group within the Muslim minority in Thrace; hence, my overall research was largely affected by cultural aspects of social change affecting the village, aspects involving a question of identity which is no longer religious, but national.
