Abstract

A consideration of development and inequality in the 1990s raises a number of matters vital to both students and practitioners of world politics. The twentieth century has witnessed enormous advances in science and technology, accompanied by an unprecedented rise in industrial and economic productivity. Yet almost a third of humanity still lives in conditions of dire poverty, and 14 million people die of hunger annually. This is one of the greatest paradoxes of the modern world.
