Social Class Differences and the Identification of Sex in Children’s Speech
It is a truism that, in learning and using language, people are susceptible to social influences in their environment. At a gross level this is shown by the fact that, for example, Chinese children learn Chinese and American children learn English. Within such broad linguistic categories, however, there may exist many regional and social accent and dialect varieties. In addition, varying degrees of prestige and value attach to different language varieties (see, for example, Giles & Powesland 1975 and see Chapter 18 in this volume). Thus within a given society the social conventions relating to language may be many and varied.
