Theology and Sharing the Economic Cake

  • Chapter
Welfare and Values

Abstract

Several chapters in this book, particularly those by Andrew Dilnot and Ian Steedman, deal with the seemingly inexorable growth in government spending and the widening gap between the aspirations of the electorate in Western democracies and the economic ability to deliver. There has been a failure of political will to deal with the problems, but more than this, generally accepted political wisdom regarding our institutions has also failed. Theology could, in principle, instigate innovative thinking and aid an approach to the problems rather than add to them by a failure to take seriously the practical realities.
