Abstract

The story of Meredith letters is not a straightforward one. Shortly after Meredith’s death, his son William put an advertisement in the press stating his intention to prepare his father’s letters for publication, appealing for help from the recipients of those letters. The response was sufficient to enable William Meredith to bring out a two-volume edition two years later. It was published by Constable, the company in which he was already a partner. So the first edition of Meredith’s letters (referred to hereafter as the early edition) appeared in 1912.
