Hillesum was twenty-seven years old when the Nazis began to round up Dutch Jews for deportation and extermination; her intense and personal religious faith led her to volunteer to be interned at Westerbork, a staging area for transport to Auschwitz. Working for the Jewish Council, Hillesum reported what she saw in her letters and in a diary that records the stages of her spiritual growth. These were not published until 1982 and appeared in English in 1983 as An Interrupted Life. These extraordinary documents became an international best-seller.
