Abstract
The pulp industry in Brazil has been making a concerted effort to conform to principles of sustainable development. All the pulp produced comes from carefully managed tree plantations, and no wood from tropical rain forests is used. Furthermore, the industry makes extensive use of renewable resources since a major share of the energy used comes from biomass. Advanced pollution control technologies are also used by the industry, and these include secondary, and in one case tertiary, treatment of effluents.
1. ABECEL is an association of Brazilian pulp exporters. The members of ABECEL are Brazilian market pulp producers such as Aracruz Cellulose, S. A., Bahia Sul Cellulose, S. A., Cenibra-Cellulose Nipo-Brasileira, S. A., Jari Cellulose, S. A., and Riocell. They produce 2.1 million tons of pulp every year and employ 23 000 persons. Of their total exports of pulp and paper, 38 per cent are directed to the EU.
