Abstract

I was an unashamed advocate of Christopher Soames as the future Governor of Rhodesia, if we did manage to get close to an agreement. I had served with him in Paris where he was, arguably, the most effective Ambassador we had sent there since the war. A great friend of Carrington, he was a senior member of the Cabinet and leader of the House of Lords. We were going to need someone who would make up in force of personality what he lacked in real power.
