Abstract

Soames consulted the British officials in all regions of Rhodesia. They reported that in the eastern tribal trust lands there had been intimidation over a long period. All the parties were able to campaign freely in the towns. All of Matabeleland was Nkomo territory, but other parties were able to operate. There were continuing complaints about the behaviour of the auxiliaries. But it could hardly be argued that free and fair elections could be held in areas where only one party was able to campaign.
