Cognitive therapists believe that understanding the link between an event, its interpretation and the emotions that follow it is an important key to resolving emotional difficulties.
They also believe that, depending on how realistically or otherwise incidents or events are interpreted, there are two broad categories of emotion; there are emotions that are easy to cope with and that generally promote productive behaviour, and there are emotions that are extreme, difficult to manage and that block productive behaviour.
