Abstract
Today, the number one factor for competitive advantage is innovation. With the changes brought about in global economic relations by the rise to prominence of the East Asian economies and the demise of Fordism as a model of industrial and wider societal regulation (see the Introduction to this volume), new approaches to creating competitive advantage have emerged. Increasing attention is paid to this imperative in European economic development measures and programmes.
