Abstract

In the aftermath of the 1931 election Labour faced a long haul if it was to return to power. By 1939, a further general election had been lost and it seemed highly unlikely that the next one would bring substantially better results. All in all, then, the 1930s was a decade of disappointment. However, developments during the period would help Labour’s ultimate return to power.
