Abstract

Chapter 1 presents a brief review of the main post-war integration efforts in Europe, up until the Maastricht Treaty. The various phases of the ERM are also discussed. The purpose is to draw lessons about the functioning of the ERM over the period, for example its asymmetric nature, and to introduce the framework within which policy will be conducted in MU.
