Abstract

Japanese society is obviously affected by the significant trends and sweeping changes that have occurred over the past half-century in the various institutions. Like them, today’s society hardly resembles that of any previous era, on the surface at least. Further down there is more continuity than many realize, some of it to the good, some less so. It is therefore necessary to take a closer look at these trends and changes to understand how society functions, who runs it and how these leaders are chosen.
