Part of the book series: Central Issues in Contemporary Economic Theory and Policy ((CICETP))

Abstract

The European Union’s policy regarding the establishment of the internal market in the electricity and natural gas industries is analysed. Two strands of policies are discussed: the first directly focused on competition; the second on the development of trans-European network infrastructures, insofar as such development is regarded as a necessary condition for competition to be effective in these sectors.

This paper is partially based on the work done by the authour within the project «Ricerca di Base: Regole del Mercato, Difesa delia Concorrenza e Razionalità delie Politiche Industriali nel Quadro Internazionale», at the Bocconi University, Milan. The author thanks L. De Paoli, F. Amman for comments on an earlier draft. Final version submitted in July 1995.
