Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to present some very general thoughts concerning the interaction between privatisation of public enterprises, the changes in the regulation of public utilities and market competition. Aside from their mere simultaneity, there is a close relationship between the privatisation processes which have taken place in a large number of countries from the beginning of the 1980s and the changes in the structure of regulation of public utility sectors in which many privatised companies operate.
