Abstract

Many scholars have noted that ‘we are at the point of a major mutation in economic structure’ across the world (Owensby 1982:15). Certainly phrases like ‘planetary planning’, ‘plurinational capitalism’, and ‘geo-economics of corporate rationality’ have a flamboyant ring (Catao 1982:5; Owensby 1982:3, 14). Yet as Owensby points out: ‘The idea of transnational firms being “Earth Managers” is not a mere contractual possibility. Increasingly it is a fact of history’ (1982:4).

Power tends to connect; absolute power connects absolutely.

(Peter Newman, Canadian Establishment. 1975:385)
