Note
In fairness to the Hegers, both had tried to warn Charlotte against the extravagant and emotional statements she was committing to paper. M. Heger’s kindliness toward Charlotte was essentially the same as that offered to other bright students he had encountered. Charlotte’s determination to be heard and answered manifested itself in a number of ways that the Hegers could not help but find potentially embarrassing. The series of rebuffs from both Hegers that she suffered, therefore, created an emotional crisis, doubtless the most severe of her life; no account of Charlotte’s life can fail to take into account this stormy passage. For a sympathetic but judicious treatment of the important events of 1842–4, see Winifred Gérin’s Charlotte Brontë: The Evolution of Genius (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1967).
