Abstract

My travels through the kingdom in the middle months of 1982 had shown an island mainly in economic recession and decline. I went now to Aberdeen to see the coastal gateway to the oil rigs of the North Sea whence came such new prosperity that the tax revenues to the government paid the bill for half of the United Kingdom’s three million unemployed.
