Abstract

German-American relations since 1949 have displayed a remarkable, even astonishing continuity... US-German harmony was the result of, or at least coincided with, a world in port, not one at sea. Powerful anchors made sure that whatever the relative role or power of both countries, they could not drift apart... But the anchors, that were dug so firmly into the ocean bed, are dragging today. The flood is rising and the world is at sea. Can Germany and the United States, once stuck together, now float together?1
