The Electronic Media and British Drama

Contemporary British drama in all its diversity and continued vitality cannot be divorced from the general background of the cultural landscape of the country as a whole: and of the factors which must not be overlooked in this context is the part played by the electronic mass-media in shaping the consciousness and the life-style of the people in the British isles. More than most other European countries perhaps, the British are an indoor people, an Englishman’s home being his castle, as the oft-repeated cliché has it: and the rise of the mass media has, if anything, reinforced this tendency.
