The Price of Monetary Unification

  • Chapter
Book cover The Eurosceptical Reader

Abstract

Many of us, and businessmen in particular, are enthusiastic that the European Project goes ahead successfully. Business benefits from a Single Market, and the sooner that it can safely enjoy the benefits of a Single Currency, the better. The more government co-operation there is in removing the innumerable — often hidden — barriers to business in Europe, whether they be different standards, complicated tax adjustments across borders, or public preferences for home producers, the better.

First published in Patrick Minford (ed.), The Cost of Europe (Manchester University Press, 1992).

I am grateful to Patrick Robertson for useful discussions and to Ralph Harris for most helpful and detailed comments on an earlier draft.
