Abstract
The topic of immigration has recently emerged as one of the most contentious social and political issues of the late twentieth century. The emergence of the immigration issue and particularly the current tension over the size of immigrant flows was unexpected two decades ago. There was no hint that international migration, would become a central topic on the political agenda. But in the last five years, in various forms, ranging from specific studies of illegal immigration, to studies of immigration control, the topic has exploded in both the research and policy arenas.
