Abstract

During the year between Leslie’s declaration and Julia’s decision to marry him, their correspondence became voluminous; whenever they were separated they wrote to each other once a day and sometimes twice or more; the longest separations took place during the holiday seasons and during the whole summer of 1877 when Leslie was in Coniston with Laura and his sister.
