Abstract
In this unit, you will be meeting more new vocabulary to enable you to travel in a Spanish-speaking country, so here are some strategies for learning and retaining vocabulary. Try a multi-sensory approach – that is, read, write and say out loud any word that you find difficult. Do this until you can recall it at will. You can try writing out words in different colours (blue for masculine and red for feminine!) or even doing small sketches to help illustrate them. These techniques are useful for those of you who have a visual memory. Try to find a connection with English. As you know by now, many words in Spanish and English are related. If there is no obvious connection – invent one! If you can’t remember the word piso for example, imagine entering a flat and seeing hundreds of cans of peas – and oh! how surprised you are! Often the sillier and more extravagant the image, the more you are likely to remember.
