Abstract
Louiseās working day began at 9.00. She is stocky, her hair is cut short and she is dressed in jeans and a dowdy jacket. Only when she speaks do you identify her middle-class background. She walks slowly, looking at the entrances to the office buildings in the posh street in central London. Suddenly she spots Andy, a young man in his early 20s, sleeping in one of those entrances in a sleeping bag. Andy responds indifferently to her warm good morning greeting; he wants to continue to sleep. Both of them know that he has to move on soon, when the office workers start arriving. Louise offers to take Andy to a nearby cafe to have a cup of tea. Reluctantly he gets up and goes with her. While having tea they discuss what he is going to do today. Louise reminds him that they soon have to go to the hostel to see if his application has been successful, and then they will go to the Crypt, where he will see the GP, have lunch and participate in some of the group activities.
