Abstract
The terms ‘long-term’ and ‘continuing/continued’ clients came into use in the 1980s, replacing the term ‘chronic’. As suggested in Chapter 2, the latter was perceived as negatively judgemental and as predetermining the likelihood of a mental health service user remaining seriously distressed forever.
