Abstract
In 1975 Stanford University in California decided to rehabilitate its course on ‘Western Civilisation’ which had been abolished in 1970. By 1978 a two-year pilot programme had been approved and in 1980 a new, year-long, required course began for all incoming students. The core reading list for the course included what were considered to be the basic ‘Great Books’ of the Western tradition — the Bible, Plato and Homer, Augustine’s Confessions, Dante’s Inferno, More and Machiavelli, Luther and Galileo, Voltaire’s Candide, The Communist Manifesto, Freud’s Civilisation and its Discontents, Darwin’s The Origin of Species.
