Abstract

Throughout this book, I have tried to argue that the intimate business of caring for chronically dependent people is directly linked to the wider responsibility that society, as a whole, has for all its members; the small-scale concerns of individuals in the caring sphere form part of the wider concerns of society at large. Thus the manner in which individuals care for each other is not simply a matter of personal and practical response to particular needs: it is permeated by the ideological attitudes upon which other social relations are also based.
