Abstract

Victory in Europe and the Far East brought an end to the continuous fighting across the world in 1945 but it did not deliver security to the western democracies. Even as VE and VJ Days were celebrated, the Soviet Union was engaged in the subjugation of the nations occupied by the Red Army and seeking to coerce others by threats and subversion. These activities were checked in Europe by the formation of NATO.
