Abstract

This chapter introduces the sociological analysis of racial and ethnic divisions. It explores their continued significance as bases for both social inequalities and social identities. The chapter concludes by linking discussion of race and ethnicity to consideration of other dimensions of stratification covered in detail in Chapters 6, 7 and 8.
