Abstract

The literature of the past is sometimes difficult to read, either because the language has changed so much that words and structures are unfamiliar, or because the author’s style is complex and different from ‘ordinary language’. This is a particular problem for pupils learning to read, or for anyone who finds reading difficult, so that they are unable to read and enjoy many worthwhile books.
