Abstract
By 1978 the state education system had shown itself to be one of the most influential institutional mechanisms for the reconstruction of Singapore society. Singaporeans had been sorted into their social positions in the industrialisation process and this stratification had produced a high degree of political submission. Education had transformed people’s perceptions of their place in society, had altered their aspirations and had begun to change their linguistic and cultural practices.
