Abstract
There is a view of drug trafficking, most strongly articulated in relation to Italy, but today also projected onto other settings such as eastern Europe, that a monopoly or cartel called ‘the Mafia’ controls drug markets, in terms of importation, distribution of drugs and, perhaps, even their retail sale. Of course, if true, then there may be considerable implications for legislation, policing and public order. But is there such a Mafia in Italy today?
