The Changing Functions of Imprisonment

Abstract

Since the Second World War the organization and the use of custody has changed significantly in many western countries. This chapter presents a framework for analyzing these changes. Although the mode of analysis draws primarily on the French situation it is applicable, I believe, with certain qualifications, to most Western countries.
