Abstract
The economist distinguishes two meanings of the word ‘investment’: (a) expenditure on the purchase of existing assets – for example, shares of a company, or an interest in an existing (perhaps tenanted) office block; (b) expenditure on the creation of new fixed assets – for example, the construction of North Sea oil rigs, or the development of a new office block.
