Abstract
The centuries-long struggle for emancipation and independence in Cuba was part of a much wider historical process: the ebbing and flowing war of national peoples throughout the world against imperial oppression. In particular, the Cuban struggle was a crucial element in regional resistance to European ambition. The early uprisings were against slavery, the most manifest symbol of imperial exploitation; later, the struggle matured to demand national independence, the essential condition for any people’s dignity and freedom.
