In Chapter 2 the theoretical basis was laid for grasping human beings as a non-specific, in a sense ahistorical, subject. We now must take a major step towards a firm theoretical grip on the historical subject, as opposed to that philosophical entity. That requires exploring the dimensions of our longitudinal totality, human history itself, and beginning to come to grips with the latitudinal totality of social formations.
