Abstract

This chapter examines the strategies and results of monetary policy in Latin American countries during the last two decades. These decades were a crucial period for the economies of the region as many of them suffered from diverse external shocks and a deep economic crisis. A steep increase in net transfers abroad caused by the external debt problems of the 1980s (in a number of cases combined with a legacy of overexpansionary financial policies in previous periods) produced, in many countries, serious financial disruption.
