Abstract
Sabbath eve in Prague. The Altneu synagogue, the oldest in Europe, is packed to overflowing. Jewish tourists rub shoulders with Czech Jews of all ages, among them many ‘lost Jews’. Friday night dinner in the neighbouring kosher restaurant with spontaneous outbursts of zmirot and benching is one of those rare occasions when Jewishness to me is a joy.
