Steps Toward People-Centred Development: Vision and Strategies

Part of the International Political Economy Series book series

It is understandable that those who travel the world sipping champagne and nibbling caviar in first-class cabins of the world’s leading airlines on their way to stays in five-star hotels are inclined to view development as one of the greatest success stories of the last half of the 20th century. However, growing numbers of those who actually work among the poor and share their daily struggles to survive in the face of hostile economic forces and collapsing natural systems have come to a very different conclusion. For them the evidence is overwhelming that the prevailing growth-centred vision of development has not only failed a substantial majority of the world’s people, but is also systematically deepening human misery and destroying our planet’s life support systems.
