Abstract
In past decades, the Horn has been battered by war and drought. Figure 12.1 shows some pathways by which these adversely affect health of communities. Although interactions and overlaps make any grouping of these processes somewhat arbitrary, this chapter considers three main headings: (i) direct effects, (ii) effects associated with people’s attempts to preserve their usual way of life in the face of adversity, and (iii) effects associated with distress sequelae that ensue when such endeavours fail or are thwarted.
