Abstract

Society envelops human existence, and the nature of this social organisation, rather than its origins, is primary for sociology. But what are human characteristics and how were they acquired? These two interrelated questions, which are often ignored by social scientists, form the basis of this book. This chapter outlines the varieties of evidence which may be used to explain the emergence of human society.
