Abstract
The study of energy changes is the core of the science of thermodynamics. When energy changes can be calculated from suitable data they help the chemist to predict whether a reaction is likely to take place and in some cases they give insights as to what is happening at the molecular level. The rate of a reaction, however, cannot be predicted, no matter how favourable the energy change may be.
