Abstract
A few years ago, sympathetic commentators could write with credibility of the respectable comparative performance of socialist developing economies, particularly in relation to industrialization (White, 1984; Jameson and Wilber, 1981; and Gurley, 1979). However, since the revolutions of 1989 in Eastern Europe and the change in the Soviet Union and some developing economies, the socialist path to development has looked particularly uncertain. In Africa, the economic performance of economies that have been described as socialist has often been weak, but not particularly so by the standards of the region. Table 13.1 brings together some basic macroeconomic data on several of these economies.
