Abstract
During the 1980s Brazilian agriculture grew at an annual rate of 3.2 per cent. This certainly represented a slow-down in comparison with the 5.6 per cent registered during the 1970s, and may be considered a disappointing performance for a country which has such an immense territory and natural resources. However, in the context of the 1980s, characterised by a sharp deceleration of the country’s economic growth and by the overall deterioration of the macroeconomic situation, the performance of agriculture in Brazil was considered remarkable by most analysts.1
